Mika’s homemade lip balm

All of the items that we’ve used today have come from eBay. The problem with making these lip balms in the Top End is that it’s so hot that they become liquidy very easily unless you keep them in the fridge. So, to keep it a little thicker, we’ve add a little bit of extra beeswax so that it remains solid in the jar and coats your lips better.

So here is the recipe for Mika’s  homemade lip balm from natural ingredients.

  1. Saucepan of boiling water
  2. Glass jar with lid
  3. Measuring spoons
  4. Tea towel
  5. Containers to put the lip balm into

  • 30g of beeswax (grated if you feel like it)
  • 4 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of vitamin e oil
  • 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons of Cocoa butter
  • 1 tablespoon Shea butter
  • 20 drops of peppermint oil (or any oil you like)

Fill your saucepan with water and place on the stove, boil. There needs to be enough water in the saucepan to cover the glass jar laying down on it’s side.

Get your glass jar and literally place all of the ingredients into the jar, in no particular order, just chuck it all in. Put the lid on and shake.

Place the glass jar in the boiling water and leave in there until all of the solid bits have melted. If you used solid beeswax, this might take a little while.

Once it’s all melted, using your tea towel (the jar will be hot), open the lid and put in your essential oil. Stir with a teaspoon.

Adding essential oil to the lip balm

Here is the tricky part, because the liquid is really hot, but you need to pour it before it sets. Using your tea towel around the jar, pour the liquid into your lip balm jars.

And that’s it! Done! Pop a lid on it and you can gift them, sell them or keep for yourself.

Hints and tricks:

  1. All ingredients can be purchased on ebay. In the NT we have limited stores that sell these items.
  2. Jars can also be purchased on eBay.
  3. You will be able to make many many batches of lip balm once you buy the ingredients.
  4. This recipe made approx 14 small 10ml jars of lip balm.
  5. You can choose whichever scent you like.
  6. You should consider getting measuring spoons, a grated (if you like) and a tea towel specifically for this project. Trying to get wax off is difficult, keep them in a kit especially for this purpose only.
